A host of local charities were among the good causes who shared more than £54,000 in donations as part of Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation’s birthday celebration - Together We Make a Difference Week.

Together We Make a Difference Week was held in June to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Charitable Foundation.

The society’s customers and the general public were invited to call into the branch in Fishergate in Preston city centre to nominate their favourite local charity to receive a £50 cash boost.

Nine charities were nominated at the branch resulting in a total donation of £650, with some charities receiving more than one nomination and therefore a larger donation.

These included Cancer Research UK, Galloway’s Society for the Blind - who received £100 - Tender Nursing Care, Preston Carers Centre, Scope Preston Centre, Rainbow House, Alzheimer’s Society, Vine House and St Catherine’s Hospice who received four nominations at £400.

The money donated is generated by the society’s unique Small Change, Big Difference scheme where members agree to donate just pennies from the interest they receive each year to make a huge pot of charity money.

Sean Wright, manager at the branch, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the number of causes nominated as part of Together We Make a Difference Week. The event was a fantastic way to celebrate the Foundation’s tenth birthday and it is a pleasure to hand out birthday presents in the form of cash donations to local charities and groups that are really important to the community in Preston.”
