Last week, driving along Higher Walton Road towards Walton-le-Dale, I passed some refuse collectors.
No, this is not a complaint about dropping rubbish. Quite the oppositve, a round of applause.
What impressed me was the speed of the guys on the road putting the bins and boxes out to be picked up by the vans. They were running, not jogging or cantering, but positively sprinting.
I am into running myself (though I am not so fast) but I've never thought of refuse collection as a possible career option.
I was utterly amazed - these guys were absolutely racing to keep ahead of that van.
No wonder a few items fall by the wayside sometimes.
But seriously, I think the benefits of a career in refuse should be promoted more widely.
